The Parable of the Gay Muslim

“Whom should I love?” A man was travelling through a bad part of the city when he was jumped by muggers, shot, robbed, and left for dead. A pastor walked by, but when he saw the beaten man, he avoided going near him. After him, a Christian blogger who staunchly defends the truth online saw the bloody man, and pretended not to notice. But a gay Muslim was passing through and when he saw the victim, took pity on him. He went to him, cleaned bandaged his wounds, put him inside his own car, took him to the hospital, and volunteered to pay the bills for the wounded victim. He then came by the day afterward to check in on the man and make sure he had everything he needed. Which person loved well? Can we make sense of all this death?

San Bernadino. Paris. The Middle East. Look in the rear-view and we see Sandy Hook, Columbine at the previous intersection, and a highway behind us of people killing people. At every occurrence the world seems shocked and horrified, as if such things are surprising. But if we had been paying attention, this is exactly what we should expect. It makes perfect sense. “… and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.” – James 1:15 I’m going to pause for a moment so that I’m not mistaken for someone who has never experienced loss and therefore just blames abstract notions.
